Scope and Contents In the early 19th century there was much public complaint about the cost and quality of Bibles produced on both sides of the Border where the respective King's printers enjoyed monopoly rights to the printing of acts of Parliament, proclamations, the Authorised Version of the Bible, the metrical psalms, catechism, etc (in England the universities of Oxford and Cambridge also had the Bible printing privilige). When the existing Scottish patent expired in 1839, new letters patent were issued...

Book of the Incorporation of Coopers of South Leith.

Scope and Contents According to a note on folio 2, the book was purchased by the Incorporation of Coopers of South Leith in 1669, and it contains records of transactions from the Acts and Statutes, 1525 to 1754. These records, which are not continuous, are chiefly of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. They include: a note of entry-fees to be paid by freemen and their sons, with the Oath of Admission (folio 22 verso); minutes of the admission of freemen from 1601 to 1754, with their marks...

There are also papers of Mrs M E Maxtone Graham concerning the publication of her book ‘The beautiful Mrs Graham’, and typescript material and correspondence concerning a projected book on Lord Lynedoch.

Content Description

Minutes, accounts and members' lists, 1948-1954, of the Edinburgh Opera Company. The Edinburgh Opera Company was founded in 1920 and was in existence until 1981. The first meeting in the minute book, 25 October 1948, records the reconstitution of the Company with new links to the Edinburgh Corporation Education Committee, which had started a new Institute of Music at Broughton High School.

Sir Walter Scott was quartermaster and secretary, and regularly attended the meetings. The minutes are in a clerk`s hand. Some letters concerning the company have been pasted in towards the end, and some concerning the manuscript at the beginning. There is a list of members at the end.
